Tough day drops men's golf into tie for third on day two at regionals

  Gold Canyon, AZ – A rough second round has dropped the Mesa men's golf team into a tie for third place at the Region I, Division II Championship being played on a very windy day at the Gold Canyon G.C.

  MCC shot a combined 321 Friday after posting a 295 on day one. Their 616 total is tied with Glendale. South Mountain rallied from fourth place to lead with a 305 Friday and a 610 total. Chandler-Gilbert is second at 612.

  Dean Harpe moved into the individual lead, shooting a 75 for a 146 total. Gage Grimes equaled his first round 76 to sit in a tie for fifth place at 152.

  Jake Guess and Brad Pottle both had difficult rounds. Guess, who opened with a 73 Thursday, elevated to an 84 for a 157 total and a tie for 12th place. Pottle shot an 87 Friday and has a 162 total, placing 16th.

  Third round play takes place Saturday. The tournament winner will receive a bid to the NJCAA Division II National Championship.  The T-Birds will receive an automatic bid as one of the host institutions of the event that will be played May 23-26 at the Longbow G.C. in Mesa.
