Mesa, AZ - It was a frustrating final few seconds for the Mesa Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon as the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters scored five points in the final five seconds to defeat Mesa, 63-61.
Up 61-58, Eastern connected on a long three pointer with two seconds left in the game to tie the game at 61.
Mesa called a timeout which advanced the ball up past half court for the T-Birds. But the Gila Monsters deflected the Mesa inbound pass, which was recoverd by Eastern. With a last ditch effort to win, Tanjanae Wells launched a shot from beyond half court but was fouled by Quynne Huggins, on a very questionable last second call.
With three foul shots, Wells connected on two of them, which finished off the win for Eastern Arizona.
Mesa led in the fourth quarter by as much as seven points, 59-52, but Eastern outscored Mesa 11-2 in the final three minutes.
Mesa will be on the road on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. then back at home on Saturday against Cochise College at 2 p.m.
