Mesa, AZ - The #17 ranked Mesa Thunderbirds defeated the Scottsdale Artichokes Friday night at Theo Heap Gym in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.
In the first set, tied at five, Mesa pulled away, scoring five straight points and forcing the Artichokes to call a timeout. Mesa went up by as much as eight points in the first set, winning 25-20.
The second set started just the same as the first set, each team exchanging points and tied at five with Mesa again going on a 5-1 rally this time to force the Scottsdale timeout. The Artichokes did manage to come back and take the lead at 16-15 but Mesa quickly jumped back in front won the set, 25-21.
Mesa didn't let up heading into the third set, as they jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, extending to it to 13-4 at one point. But Scottsdale did not let up, as they cut the T-Bird advantage down to 22-20. But did not break though as they completed the three set sweep with a 25-21 set victory.
For Mesa, now they have 10 wins on the season, which is the first time in 11 seasons Mesa has had at least 10 wins. Their overall record is 10-4, with a 7-2 ACCAC mark.
Mesa will be on the road for the next three matches, next Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert, then Friday at South Mountain, with the following Wednesday being at Eastern Arizona. All match times will be at 7 p.m.
