Mesa, AZ - Two top twenty teams showed why they are some of the best teams in the country Wednesday night as the #19 Mesa Thunderbirds fell to the #3 Glendale Gauchos in five sets, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 17-19.
The Gauchos all but sewed up the match in the fourth set when they lead 20-12 before Mesa staged an incredible comeback to eventually tie the set at 24. The T-Birds won the set 26-24, forcing a pivotal set five.
Once again, Glendale jumped ahead quickly, going up 9-2. But once again, just like set four, rallied back and tied the set at 11. Both teams tied again at 12 but Glendale rattled off two points to go up 14-12. The T-Birds again showed their resilense by tying the set back up at 14. After exchanging points, Mesa took a 16-15 advantage with a service to win.
Glendale had the final say though as they scored the final four out of five points to win the match.
Mesa's record is now 11-8 overall and 8-6 in the ACCAC. Mesa is currently sitting in the second position in the ACCAC DII playoff picture with two matches to play, both against DII opponents.
The T-Birds will be at Phoenix College on Friday night then have a week off before playing Pima at home next Friday, October, 28th.
