Mesa, AZ - The #9 Mesa Thunderbirds closed out the Pima Aztecs Wednesday night in three close sets, 28-26, 27-25, 26-24.
The T-Birds have enjoyed some close victories of late, with a big win against then #7 Glendale in five sets. Mesa again battled down to the wire in each set Wednesday night to get the victory.
"I'm proud of the girls for keeping their composure, especially when we started down in two of the sets, " said Coach Megan Taylor.
It was the Aztecs who jumped out in front in set one, taking an 8-4 lead then extending it to a 15-10 advantage. Mesa then rattled off an 11-6 run to tie the set at 21. The Aztecs scored the next two points however, forcing a T-Birds timeout. Mesa was able to tie it up at 24 and eventually take the set, 26-24.
Set two belong to Mesa at the get go, having a 10-7 lead, extending it to a 16-13 lead. The Aztecs then went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 18. From there, the T-Birds and Aztecs would combine for five more ties, the last at point 25. The T-Birds then finished off the last two points and won, 27-25.
Pima jumped out quickly again in set three, forging an 8-2 advantage. Mesa once again battled back, going on a 5-0 run at one point, which was apart of an 8-2 run, to tie the set at 10. And just like set two, they exchanged ties and leads like it was a white elephant gift exchange.
Mesa did manage to get the lead to 15-12 but Pima once again tied it up at 15. Seven more ties eventually landed each team at 24. The T-Birds finalized the match with the last two points and won set three, 26-24.
