All in the (Mesa) family
If there is a "royal family" of Mesa athletics it might well be the Pews.
Three members of that clan have been involved in MCC athletics, stretching all the way back to the late 1970s and all earned All-American honors.
Most recently it was Susan Pew who won the NJCAA pole vault national championship in 2013 with a leap of 13- ¼ which still stands as the Mesa all-time record.
Susan actually won All-American honors two other times. At the 2012 indoor championships she finished fourth at 11-3 ¾ and followed that was a second place at the 2013 indoor title meet with a jump of 11-11 ¾.
She was following in the footsteps of her sister Lauren, herself a four-time pole vault All-American in 2008-09.
Lauren's best efforts were a second place at the 2009 indoor championships where she cleared 11-8 and a second place outdoors in 2008 with a jump of 11-8 ½.
However, the doyenne of the family might well be cousin Kari, a two-sport star, adding volleyball to her accomplishments in track and field.
Kari won the national championship in the 100-meter hurdles in 1978 with a time of 14.4, at the time the national record. She was also an All-American in the 100-meter dash.
In volleyball, she helped lead the T-Birds to the 1977 national championship and was named a first team All-American in that sport making her one of the few athletes to earn that honor in two totally unrelated sports.
Kari completed her career with two outstanding years at Brigham Young and in 2007 she was inducted into the MCC Athletic Hall of Fame.
There have been other outstanding family groupings in Mesa athletic history, but few can probably match the Pews.
