It has been just over a year since the passing of former Mesa Community College Sports Information Director, Wayne Block. His absence continues to be deeply felt throughout MCC Athletics, where he left a lasting legacy of excellence, passion, and dedication.
Block was with Mesa for over 10 years, serving as the Coordinator of Athletic Marketing and Public Relations and working within the Sports Information Department. His impact on the program was immediate and transformational. From helping broadcast games to upgrading the athletic website and updating record books, Block played a key role in helping MCC Athletics become one of the premier athletic departments in the conference.
With more than 45 years in athletics, Block brought a wealth of experience to MCC. Before arriving at Mesa, he worked with InMaricopa and got his start as a sports writer for the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union. He later served as the Sports Information Director for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and C.W. Post College, and was the first full-time assistant SID at Virginia Tech, a role he held for four years.
At MCC, Block was known not only for his work ethic and professionalism but for the genuine relationships he built with coaches and student-athletes.
"The athletes and coaches at Mesa were the most enjoyable part of my job, all that I worked with were some of the most driven and determined people I've worked with in my career," Block said in an interview following his retirement.
Athletic Director John Mulhern reflected on Block's contributions:
"Wayne made a huge and lasting impact on MCC athletics and all of the student-athletes he came in contact with. We were so fortunate he selected MCC as his efforts, passion, and commitment will never be forgotten."
Block is very missed at MCC Athletics. His legacy lives on through the programs he helped shape, the lives he touched, and the standard of excellence he upheld every day. The loss is felt not only at Mesa, but across the athletic communities he served for nearly five decades. MCC remains proud to be one of the many places Wayne Block called home.
