Mesa Baseball completed a home and home series sweep of the Gateway Geckos on Wednesday as the T-Birds improved their record to 17-4 (8-2 ACCAC).
Game One:
The T-Birds came out hot against Gateway in the first three innings scoring nine runs in the opening three frames while surrendering just three to the Geckos. Mesa was in firm control of the game all the way through the eighth inning as they took a 12-5 lead into the ninth.
Gateway would not go quietly as they would battle back in the bottom of the ninth to score seven runs and tie the game at 12. Mesa would rebound in the 11th inning scoring two runs to again put the Geckos on the ropes.
Daniel Harris would shut down Gateway in the bottom of the frame, striking out the final batter looking to secure the T-Birds 14-12 victory.
Game Two:
In their rematch on Wednesday both teams struggled to string hits together as both combined for just nine total. Going into the bottom of the eighth inning Mesa found themselves trailing, 2-1 when Mason Shea reached on an error that would allow Mason Spellecy to score and tie the game.
Jayden Watts would shut down the Geckos in the top of the ninth to allow Mesa to walk it off in the bottom of the inning. Though the T-Birds were able to get runners on first and second in their half of the inning, they failed to bring them across sending Mesa to their second extra inning ballgame in as many days.
Watts was again able to work Mesa through the tenth successfully, surrendering no runs.
Luke Hewes would come up in the bottom of the inning with one out and hammer a ball to deep left field that sailed over the fence, sealing the 3-2 win for Mesa.
The T-Birds are back in action on Friday at home as they host South Mountain, first pitch at 3pm.
