Men's Basketball picks up conference win over South Mountain on Wednesday

Mesa Men's Basketball started off 2025 on the right foot as they defeated South Mountain on Wednesday night, 73-69. With the win MCC improved their record to 5-11 (2-4 ACCAC).

In the first half Mesa shot the ball well as they went 13-28 (46.4%) from the field. Defensively Mesa was able to hold the Cougars to 11-30 (36.7%) in the first half but did send SMCC to the free throw line 10 times where they made seven of their attempts. Mesa trailed South Mountain at the halftime break, 33-32.

In the second half Mesa shot the ball 15-27 (55.6%) from the field as they totaled 41 points to the Cougars 36. MCC forced South into foul trouble which resulted in 11 free throws for Mesa where they would hit 10 of them. South Mountain improved their shooting in the second half as they went 14-25 (56%) but Mesa played well in crunch time to help them secure the win. 

MCC will be back in action on Jan. 15 as they will travel to take on Chandler-Gilbert in conference action.

Breakout T-Birds:

Talbot Cummard led all scorers with 25 points as he went 6-10 from the field and 12-12 from the charity stripe. Cummard had a 17 point second half which helped power Mesa to victory. 

Tyreek Dean had 13 points and five boards for Mesa, while Shakir Galab started hot as he scored 10 points in the opening half nailing two three-pointers. Mike Alexander was a spark off the bench as he had 10 points to go along with eight rebounds.
