Men's Basketball opened its ACCAC schedule with a strong road win at Chandler-Gilbert before falling just short in a back-and-forth contest against Scottsdale. The Thunderbirds move to 5–3 overall and 1–1 in ACCAC play as conference action continues.
MCC 70, Chandler-Gilbert 65
Mesa began league play with a controlled and efficient performance, defeating Chandler-Gilbert 70–65 on the road. The T-Birds built a nine-point halftime lead and held off a late CGCC surge thanks to balanced scoring and strong rebounding.
Ezias Steffen led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds on an outstanding 7–8 shooting night. Landon Brewer added 17 points, and Kaden Gollhuir filled the stat sheet with 14 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds.
Mesa shot 45.8% from the field, went 12-for-13 at the free-throw line, and won the rebounding battle 46–38. The T-Birds also recorded 16 assists, showcasing strong ball movement while withstanding Chandler-Gilbert's second-half push.
Scottsdale 83, MCC 80
Mesa's second ACCAC matchup came down to the final seconds in an intense 83–80 loss to Scottsdale at Theo Heap Gym. The Thunderbirds shot 50% from the floor, had three players in double figures, and kept Scottsdale in check defensively for long stretches.
In the decisive final sequence, Scottsdale hit a go-ahead three-pointer with under 30 seconds remaining, taking an 82–80 lead. After a turnover on the next possession, the Artichokes were fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws, giving Mesa four seconds to go the length of the court. Kaden Gollhuir got a clean look from deep, but the shot was long as MCC's comeback fell just short.
Landon Brewer and Ezias Steffen each scored 18 points, with Tyreek Dean delivering a major boost off the bench totaling 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kashar Benton added seven points and five boards, while Gollhuir contributed nine points and six assists.
Mesa shot 52% in the second half and 88% from the line, but Scottsdale's 52.5% shooting, nine three pointers, and timely late possessions proved the difference.
Mesa now sits at 5–3 (1–1 ACCAC) as conference play continues, with the T-Birds looking to build on their efficient offensive play and late-game execution moving forward.
