Prescott, AZ - For the second time this week, the Mesa Thunderbirds have defeated a national ranked team. This time it was the likes of #20 Yavapai College as the T-Birds took down the Roughriders, 2-1, in overtime.
This was the first win over Yavapai College in recent memory, with the closest Mesa came to winning was back in 2013, which was a 1-1 tie. Without a doubt, this has been the best week of soccer for the men's soccer program in past few seasons.
Mesa scored first in the 21st minute with a goal from Miguel De La Cruz with an assist coming from Danny Baca, putting the T-Birds up 1-0. The Roughriders tied the match up at one in the 74th minute, forcing overtime. In the second overtime, Moses Durazo scored the winning goal for Mesa in the 106th minute, off a rebound from the crossbar.
The T-Birds have won their last four matches and gone 6-2-1 in their last nine contests.
Mesa moves to 8-5-2 on the season and in the ACCAC. The T-Birds play three times next week, beginning Tuesday at home against Chandler-Gilbert, beginning at 4:30 pm. Mesa then travels to South Mountain for a 1 pm start then they will finish the week at Pima with a 4:30 pm start time.
