MESA TRACK & FIELD RECAP: PVCC INDOOR INVITATIONAL
Mesa Community College Track & Field delivered a productive performance at the PVCC Indoor Invitational on Saturday, producing multiple event victories and seven NJCAA Indoor National Championship qualifiers across the women's and men's squads.
The Thunderbird women were led by a trio of distance wins and strong field performances. Lucy Melzer claimed first place in the mile, crossing in 5:09.50 to meet the national qualifying standard. Olivia Baker followed with a victory in the 5k, posting an 18:23.33 to also punch her ticket to nationals. In the 600 meters, Katelyn Munoz finished third in 1:38.07, adding another national qualifier for Mesa.
In the field, Alexis Dvorak continued her strong indoor season with a second-place finish in the pole vault at 3.20 meters to qualify for nationals. Maleah Tucker highlighted the meet for Mesa by winning the weight throw with a mark of 17.00 meters and currently sits ranked No. 1 in the nation in the event.
On the men's side, Mesa produced victories across multiple disciplines. Deng Majak captured first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.51 to earn a national qualifying mark, while Josef Iker won the mile in 4:17.66. Cal Schnepf added another distance win for the Thunderbirds, taking first in the 5,000 meters in 15:04.72.
Mesa also found success in the sprints and field events. Caden Hardison placed second in the 600 meters (1:20.81), and DeAndre Gatlin won the high jump with a clearance of 1.99 meters. In the pole vault, Michael Mickelson won the event at 4.93 meters, while Connor Wilson finished third at 4.48 meters, with both clearing national qualifying standards.
In the throws, Larry Smith finished runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 14.47 meters, and Keian Evans placed second in the weight throw at 15.71 meters.
