Phoenix, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds battled their way into the championship round of the Region I - ACCAC DII tournament but came of just short of heading to nationals as they fell in the final game to Phoenix College, 13-0.
To get into the championship round, the T-Birds had to take down the Paradise Valley Pumas for the second time in the tournament. After each team exchanged scoreless innings, the T-Birds cracked the scoring door open pushed across seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Steady in the circle was Sammy Quezada, who didn't allow a run in the 7-0 victory over the Pumas. In the 14 innings Quezada pitched, she allowed just two runs and two wins.
This was the best finish to a Region I tournament for the T-Birds since the 2010 season when Mesa was the runner-up as well.
Mesa finishes the season with a 27-29 overall record.
