Mesa Community College
Mesa Community College Softball earned a historic split against No. 11 Phoenix College on Tuesday, highlighted by the program's first win over the Bears since 2019 in the opener.
Game 1 — W, 4-3
Mesa opened the day with a statement victory over the nationally ranked Bears, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second to build an early cushion. The T-Birds held off a late Phoenix push behind a complete-game performance from Sydnee Taylor, who allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out seven. Offensively, Shawnacy Serrano delivered a clutch two-RBI double, while Sammy Alcantar added an RBI to help Mesa secure the milestone win. Despite being outhit, the T-Birds capitalized on key opportunities and executed in pressure moments to seal the 4-3 victory.
Game 2 — L, 8-4
Phoenix responded in the nightcap, using power at the plate to even the series. The Bears scored in four different innings, including two home runs from Olivia Deford, who drove in four runs. Mesa stayed within striking distance early, scoring four runs across the first four innings behind RBIs from Alyssa Antillon, Audrey Reeder, and Skylynn Salazar-Bell. Antillon led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while the T-Birds totaled eight hits but could not overcome Phoenix's late surge.
Mesa will look to build on the historic win as they continue conference action against Chandler-Gilbert & Paradise Valley this week.
