No. 6 Mesa Community College Women's Basketball continued its dominant run Saturday afternoon, pulling away for a 66–54 victory over Chandler-Gilbert Community College to extend its winning streak to 12 games.
After a slow opening quarter, Mesa flipped the game in the second. The Thunderbirds improved from 30.8 percent shooting in the first quarter to 50.0 percent in the second, while CGCC went the opposite direction, dropping from 53.3 percent in the first quarter to just 9.1 percent in the second. The swing fueled a 20–4 Mesa advantage in the period and a 28–22 halftime lead.
Lakeisha Robinson sparked the surge, scoring 10 of her game high 17 points in the second quarter alone, outscoring CGCC by herself in the frame.
Mesa kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter. Amya Bekele maintained the momentum by knocking down back-to-back three-pointers, helping the Thunderbirds stretch the lead while shooting 53.3% in the period.
The Thunderbirds finished the afternoon shooting 47.3% from the field, holding CGCC to 36.2%. Mesa controlled the game down the stretch and never relinquished the lead after the second-quarter run.
With the win, Mesa improves to 13–3 (7-0 ACCAC). The Thunderbirds are back in action Wednesday as they travel to take on No. 23 Scottsdale.
