No. 6 Mesa Community College Women's Basketball turned in a wire-to-wire performance Saturday afternoon, defeating Glendale Community College, 72-43.
Mesa set the tone immediately, knocking down four three-pointers in the first quarter to open a 28–4 lead. Carmella Gallardo accounted for three of the four triples in the opening frame as the Thunderbirds shot 57.1%from deep and held Glendale to just 16.7% shooting.
The defensive pressure continued throughout the first half, as Mesa held Glendale under 10 points in two separate quarters and took a commanding advantage into halftime.
Glendale found its best stretch in the third quarter, outscoring Mesa 19–13. The Thunderbirds answered primarily from the perimeter, with nine of their 13 points in the quarter coming from three-point range. Jordan Watts connected on two triples, while Amya Bekele added another to steady the momentum.
Mesa reasserted control in the fourth quarter, closing the game with an 18–12 advantage to seal the win. Lakeisha Robinson led all scorers with 18 points and added nine rebounds, while Gallardo finished with 12 points. Mesa shot 44.6% from the field and limited Glendale to 30.8% for the game.
With the victory, Mesa improves to 14-4 (8-1 ACCAC). The Thunderbirds are back in action Wednesday on the road at Phoenix College.
