MESA TRACK & FIELD RECAP: JIM MIELKE, AL SHIRLEY INVITATIONAL

Mesa Community College Track & Field opened the 2026 indoor season over the weekend at the Jim Mielke Multis and the Al Shirley Invitational in Tucson, AZ. The T-Birds posted multiple event wins and national qualifiers on both the men's and women's sides.


Women

Marley Peay placed 4th in the pentathlon with 2,679 points, highlighted by third-place finishes in both the 800m (2:36.07) and high jump (1.43m).

Mesa controlled the weight throw, with Maleah Tucker winning the event (16.72m), A'Ryah Clark finishing second (13.69m), and Tiffany Nunez taking fourth (13.07m). Tucker also placed second in the shot put (11.67m). Alexis Dvorak earned second in the pole vault (3.05m). Tucker (weight throw) and Dvorak (pole vault) both qualified for nationals.

The 4,000m Distance Medley Relay team of Lucy Melzer, Laila Jones, Katie Munoz, and Olivia Baker won the event in 12:53.3, qualifying for nationals.

In the 1000m, Melzer (3:04.15) and Munoz (3:04.58) finished first and second, respectively & both punched their tickets to nationals.


Men

Keian Evans captured first in the weight throw (15.70m), with teammates Davin Pearson (14.49m) and Larry Smith (13.96m) placing third and fourth.

In the pole vault, Michael Mickelson won the event (4.78m) and Conner Weems followed with 4.33m—both qualifying for nationals.

DeAndre Gatlin claimed first in the high jump (2.09m) to qualify for nationals.

The 4,000m Distance Medley Relay of Brady Moar, Clarence Stuart V, Deng Majak, and Josef Iker took first, earning a national berth.

Michael Valenzuela won the 600m (1:19.74) and qualified for nationals.
